\nThe root queen knows your heart
\nThe root queen\u2019s crown is thorn and branch;
\nher garden, silver bones,
\nwhere acorn-seeds dream of oak-leaves,
\nand shadows speak of bright.<\/p>\n

Have you seen the root queen there,
\ncombing winter from her hair?
\nO winter! Full of starry airs, and ice-dark nights,
\nand bright-gray days.
\nWinter, full of riddling ways, circles of stones,
\nand frost-limned leaves; through winter
\nlove is evergreen \u2014<\/p>\n

And if you spy the root queen there,
\nwinter dripping from her hair?<\/p>\n

The root queen\u2019s heart is secrets kept.
\nThe root queen\u2019s heart is warmth.
\nThe root queen\u2019s crown is horn and bough;
\nher garden, blood and snow,
\nwhere foxes burrow down and deep,
\nand mice speak of the owl.<\/p>\n

Have you dared the root queen\u2019s eyes,
\nand found the hearth inside the ice?
\nO hearth! Rest there your tired feet, your wind-raw hands,
\nyour hungry heart.
\nHearthside watch the embers spark, bright candles carved
\nto look like men; through winter,
\ntales begin again \u2014<\/p>\n

And if you dare the root queen\u2019s eyes,
\nand find the fire inside the ice?<\/p>\n

The root queen knows your story\u2019s end;
\nThe root queen knows its start.
\nThe root queen\u2019s crown is branch and bone;
\nshe\u2019ll charm away your hope \u2014
\nwhere beech seeds dream of tall beech trees
\nand shadows, touching light.<\/p>\n

\nO seed and sleep, frost and fir;
