Was it a mask she wore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the whole time I was with her?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The thing about faeries is, they\u2019re not like us,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>material. Indeed, they most resemble<\/em><br \/>\n<em>assemblages constructed from our dreams.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Their visible forms are for our benefit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sometimes, as we lay together in bed<\/em><br \/>\n<em>under a canopy of spider-silk,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I would turn and find she had become a tree,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>branches for arms, a bird\u2019s nest between her legs,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>with three blue, speckled eggs. Were they our children?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019d blink, and she would be a woman again,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>yawning and stretching as human women do.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She\u2019d smile at me with a fox\u2019s sly, wise smile<\/em><br \/>\n<em>as though she had tricked me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The castle was sometimes made of rough gray stone<\/em><br \/>\n<em>covered with moss, sometimes of murky water<\/em><br \/>\n<em>with fish swimming in the walls. When we danced, the music<\/em><br \/>\n<em>came from viols or the buzz of a hundred bees.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I sat on chairs that were either toadstools or clouds,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and ate from plates that stared back up at me,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>blinking iridescent eyes. What did I eat there?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Air? Insects? Salads of delicate herbs?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The bread tasted like ashes.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5885&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<em>Sometimes she loved me, and we would ride together<\/em><br \/>\n<em>on robins, or was it flowering hawthorn branches<\/em><br \/>\n<em>whose thorns would prick my legs through leather trousers?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>With her strange retinue: the faerie knights<\/em><br \/>\n<em>riding on weasels, the goblin standard-bearers<\/em><br \/>\n<em>holding thistle spears. They were always half something else, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>with the heads of toads or owls, a bat\u2019s black wings.<br \/>\nEverything there was always half something else,<br \/>\nexcept the faerie women, wholly themselves,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and so luminous you had to look at them<\/em><br \/>\n<em>through tinted spectacles. It was the fashion<\/em><br \/>\n<em>to sew living butterflies unto their shoulders,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>so they moved in a halo of colored dust<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and panicked flapping.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Awkwardly, at the rear of the procession,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>walked a stray cat she had turned into a boy,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>who mewed and tried to scratch me.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I was mostly unhappy, but sometimes happy.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The problem is this: I would rather be unhappy in fairyland<\/em><br \/>\n<em>than happy elsewhere. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At night, I lie beside a woman who never<\/em><br \/>\n<em>turns into a tree, who bears me human children.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And all I can think of is her hard black eyes,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>which sometimes looked at me with such disdain,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>her small red mouth that never told me the truth<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and laughed when I believed her.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That fox\u2019s face, which was probably always a mask.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Sometimes I go into the forest alone<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and whisper into the hollow knot of an oak:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019d rather spend an hour in fairyland<\/em><br \/>\n<em>than a lifetime elsewhere.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Then I stand in the green silence, with only the cries<\/em><br \/>\n<em>of birds, the shush of the oak leaves high above,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and wonder if she\u2019s listening.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text]<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"[vc_column_text]She had eyes like apple seeds.
